Ferdinand and Exceller

Ferdinand was the 1986 Kentucky Derby winner and twice was bvoted Horse of the Year. His lifetime earnings of $3,777,978.00 made him, at one time, the fifth leading money earner of all time. His stud fee at his retirement was set at $30,000.00. Unfortunately, Ferdinand did not excell in the breeding shed and was eventually sold to a breeding farm in Japan.

At the age of 19, Ferdinand was slaughtered in a Japenese slaughterhouse.

Exceller raced in the United States and Europe and had lifetime earnings of 1,654,003.00. He was, and still is, the only horse to have defeated two Triple Crown winners, Affirmed and Seattle Slew. His stud fee at his retirement was set at $50,000.00. Sadly, he was not a success as a stud and his fee plummeted to a mere $2500.00.

In 1997, Exceller was slaughtered in a Swedish slaughterhouse.

Ironically, in 1999, just two years after his death, Exceller was elected to the Racing Hall of Fame.

These are two incredibly successful racehorses whose lives tragically, and needlessly, ended in a slaughterhouse.

These two horses' lives have been instrumental in the Horse Welfare fight where they are used as examples of the tragedy and waste of horse slaughter.

The Western American lifestyle puts weight on the treatment of our animals.  Especially the animals we rely upon and relied upon when we were expanding the western frontier.  A cowboys first thought was always to his horse.  Watered and fed before he was, the horse was transportation and a companion.  We at Shiloh aim to keep horses out from under the shadow of slaughter just because they are not producing the all mighty dollar.
