Fortune and Twinkle in the turn out on 3/17/08

Fortune was born at Shiloh on 4/25/07, her mother is Deliverance, one of the feedlot mares who were rescued from slaughter while heavily pregnant. Fortune looks like she is a Draft mix, she has very big bone and is a bigger baby. She is very cute and healthy!

Fortune looking so cute on 2/20/08! She is getting so big, but still very gentle and kind. She is doing great!

Fortune is getting so big, 3/13/08

Fortune is recovering wonderfully!
Shiloh wants to thank everyone who donated to help us with Fortune! She is well on her way to recovering fully, she is doing wonderfully! Thank you so much for the prayers and thoughts as well, they made a difference to us and to Fortune!

The Fortune Fund is closed and our vet bill has been paid. The $961.20 in the fund went to pay our bill. THANK YOU!

UPDATE: 8/25/07 Fortune is doing great- everything seems normal! Looks like her surgery worked, what a relief! This little filly has been through so much in her short life...

UPDATE: 8/23/07 Fortune is doing wonderfully! She is alert and eating and she wants to play!

UPDATE: 8/22/07 Fortune is doing great! Her belly wrap is now off and she is trying to play around during her daily hand walks! That's a great sign!

UPDATE: 8/20/07 Fortune has returned home to Shiloh! She is doing well and is currently in the bungalows with her mother. She is wearing a belly wrap and can only be hand walked for the next 3 months! No turn out to play! Poor little thing- it will be hard for her to not have the room to run and play. She appears to be healing well!

Please feel free to come on out and visit her anytime!

After her return to Shiloh, she had to wear this belly bad for support and protection of her suture site. She no longer needs to wear it!

UPDATE: Friday 8/17/07 Great news as Fortune is coming home tomoorw (Sat) morning! We are so excited! This baby is a miracle! We are all amazed at her will to live...

UPDATE: 8/16/07 Thursday morning.

We are hoping that Fortune can return home to Shiloh tommorow (Friday). She is doing pretty well, still a bit of a temp sometimes and a little lethargic. The vets are doing some more blood work on her before they give us the go ahead to bring her home. She is not recovering quite as well as they would like, but she is doing okay.

Our vet bill so far is: just under $6,000.00 (Calculated as of 8/14/07)

UPDATE: 8/13/07

A few nights ago little baby Fortune underwent emergency colic surgery at the vet clinic!

Fortune is the brave little filly who survived Spinal Menanjitis when she was just one week old. She made a miraculous recovery from that, came back to the rescue, moved into the Day Care pasture with her mother and all the other babies. She filled out and was doing so great- but a few mornings ago, she began to colic very badly and was rushed to the clinic.

She was badly distended with gas. We suspected an impaction in her intestines. She was put on fluids and meds and was watched around the clock for any improvement. She continued to go downhill quickly and it finally came to the point where if she did not have the colic surgery, she would die.

After everything this little baby has been through and survived- we had to give her the chance at life! She is only 4 months old, sweet, friendly, loves people. She already beat the odds at the feedlot and slaughter, we had to give her every chance at life we could!

Her surgery was estimated at $6,000 to $10,000, something that is almost impossible for the rescue to come up with on such short notice, but we went ahead anyway. To save her, we had no choice.

Fortune had the surgery and is recovering, and at the moment, she is doing well. We were told tongiht that she may be able to return home as early as Thursday! Once she gets back to Shiloh, we welcome all visitors and volunteers to visit her and give her your well wishes in person!

We have set up a "Fortune Fund" to help with her surgery bill. Any donation is appreciated- anything will help and 100% of the donations will go to pay the vet bill.

I will be posting the exact amount of her surgery as soon as the clinic gets me the figure!

Please donate to "THE SHILOH HORSES" in our donation pages. All donations to the Shiloh Horses for the next few weeks will go to Fortune and her vet care!

Checks can be mailed to us at:

Shiloh Charitable Trust

We will keep a running tally so everyone can see how much has been donated. Remember, your donations are tax deductable!

THANK YOU for helping us help this sweet little baby!

UPDATE: 5/20/07 Little Fortune is doing great- really making a full recovery. She is super friendly and loves people and being scratched. She will make someone a very nice horse.

UPDATE: 5/10/07 A happy update as Fortune is back at Shiloh recovering. She is looking and feeling alot better, even doing some scampering in the turn out!

UPDATE: 5/8/07 Little Fortune will be returning home to Shiloh tomorrow morning (Weds)! She does have Meningitis (found after a spinal tap), but is responding to treatment. She will remain on antibiodics (oral) and will remain under observation. More will be posted when she gets home to Shiloh!

UPDATE: 5/5/07 It is looking like Fortune does have Menangitis, her spinal tap showed it. She is being treated and we are hoping she will recover- but her prognosis is guarded. We are hoping to be able to bring Fortune back home to Shiloh next week and treat her there.

UPDATE: 5/4/07 Fortune is still having tests done on her. Her head and neck have been x-rayed, the film is being sent to UC Davis to be read again. She seems to have possible head trauma and injury to a nerve in her face that controls balance, etc. She walks in circles and bumps into walls. However, there is no sign of an injury. Or it could be a possible Menangitis (spelling!) that is causing her nuerologic signs.

Her prognosis may be poor- if she survives she may be mentally handicapped. If so, she will live out her life at Shiloh Ranch surrounded by loving and caring people.

We will update her condition again!

Fortune, a week old foal born to feedlot mare, Deliverance, was rushed to the vet clinic today. She had begun acting very strangely this morning and we didn't wait, we loaded them up and drove to the clinic. Both Fortune and Deliverance will be staying at the clinic as the vets test her to see what is wrong. She is very ill and we are very worried about her.

Another example of a feedlot mare, who was given no prenatal care (before she came to Shiloh) during her pregnancy. So sad for both mare and foal...

We will keep Fortune's story updated...
