Dream is available to an experienced home only, she is NOT halterbroke. She will take carrots from hand. She is sound and healthy.

Dream is a little bay mare who was rescued from the Fallon feedlot with the help of the FOBs. In spite of being pregnant, Dream was dumped at the feedlot to be slaughtered along with her unborn foal. More info to come!
Dream is currently out in the Cuckoo's Nest Pasture, with many of the other pregnant mares that were rescued with her.

Dream, a feedlot mare who arrived from the Fallon feedlot last week, gave birth to a little filly early this morning. We named the filly, "Wishes". While the birth was uneventful, Dream would not allow Wishes to nurse. Dream is a young mare and a first time mother, and does not have clue what to do. Unfortunately, she is also untouchable and was becoming aggressive when we tried to help the foal find it's way. During the birth, Shiloh trys to never interfere, we do not enter the stall, we watch from afar, until the foal and mother have bonded, the baby is up, starting to walk, and nursing. We like to let Nature takes it's course, we only enter if there is a problem.

Finally, we had to make the tough decision to take the foal in to the vet clinic for badly needed Colustrum at hour 5- there is a 12 hour window for the newborn to get the Colostrum but Dream had begun to kick out and squeal each time Wishes tried to drink. We had to remove her to prevent her from getting hurt.

We took Wishes into the vet clinic where she was tubed and give the Colostrum and also given an enema to keep things moving along. We then returned her to Shiloh where we hoped Dream would accept her back and allow her to nurse. It was not to be, although she is not aggressive toward the baby, she moves away if she tries to drink. We even had Wishes nurse off of Navidad, another feedlot mare who had given birth to Rain. Navidad tolerated Wishes- but little Rain began to become stressed and angry, so that had to stop.

As of right now- we are bottle feeding Wishes. She is remaining with her mom, Dream, who is caring for her- just still not allowing her to nurse. Sally and Bev are taking tonight's shift and will be feeding her every 1.5 hours! It is going to be a long, long night!

Please keep a good thought for little Wishes, she is not out of the woods yet. Raising an orphaned foal is difficult and complicated- but we are going to do everything we can to help her pull through.

UPDATE 4/26/07! Great news! Dream has accepted Wishes back and is now nursing her! Thanks to the work of Sally and Bev, Wishes figured out what to do and so did Dream! No more bottle feeding!
