Onyx and her young foal, Blackbird, were rescued from a feedlot in Fallon, NV where they were scheduled to be shipped to slaughter in Canada within a day.

UPDATE: 6/30/06 Onyx and Blackbird are doing great, they have started to settle down a bit and little Blackbird is becoming very curious about people and is thinking about interacting with us. Onyx is still extremely wary and will not let a person approach her. But, after the life she must have had, who can blame her? We continue to talk to her and the other mares, but we make no moves to approach them, we are letting them feel comfortable enough to decide to come to us. They will, it will just take time, and they will have all the time they need at Shiloh.

UPDATE: 8/3/06 The little filly, Blackbird, has been adopted by Placido of Las Vegas. She will stay at Shiloh for another 30-45 days until she is ready to be weaned from her mother. She will join another Shiloh horse, Truckee (who came from the same feedlot) in her new home!

UPDATE: 8/27/06 Onyx has been adopted by a wonderful Las Vegas family! They also adopted her best friend, Alta. We will keep their story updated!
